What Is Brass Machining?

Brass CNC machining is a precision subtractive manufacturing process that uses computer-controlled machine tools — primarily high-speed milling centers and lathes — to remove material from brass stock (bar, rod, plate, or forgings) to produce high-accuracy components with outstanding machinability and functional/aesthetic properties.

Brass is a copper-zinc alloy valued for its excellent machinability (among the best of all metals), attractive golden appearance, good corrosion resistance, high electrical and thermal conductivity, non-magnetic behavior, and antimicrobial characteristics in many environments. Different alloy families offer tailored balances of strength, ductility, machinability, and corrosion performance.

Key advantages in machining brass:

  • Superior chip formation and high cutting speeds enable fast cycle times, long tool life, and cost-effective production, especially with free-machining grades.
  • Ability to achieve excellent surface finishes directly from machining, often reducing or eliminating secondary polishing operations.
  • Excellent suitability for 3-axis, 4-axis, and full 5-axis simultaneous machining to produce complex geometries, fine details, threads, and thin-walled components in a single setup.

Our services encompass CNC milling (3/4/5-axis), CNC turning (including Swiss-style for small precision parts), drilling, tapping, threading, engraving, and integrated operations. We handle everything from rapid prototypes and functional test parts to low- and medium-volume production runs with full material traceability and rigorous quality control.

Products Made with Brass CNC Machining

C36000 (Free-Machining Brass) is the industry standard for high-volume precision turned and milled components due to its exceptional machinability. The addition of lead promotes clean chip breaking and allows significantly higher cutting speeds with minimal tool wear. It offers good strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance for most general applications. At XHYE, we leverage C36000’s outstanding machinability to produce complex fittings, valves, connectors, and precision parts with excellent surface finishes and tight tolerances at highly competitive cycle times, making it the go-to choice for plumbing, electrical, and industrial hardware.

C26000 (Cartridge Brass) provides an excellent balance of strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance with a rich golden appearance. It is widely used for ammunition casings, musical instruments, decorative hardware, and components requiring good formability alongside machinability. XHYE applies refined machining parameters to C26000 to achieve superior surface quality and dimensional accuracy on both functional and aesthetic parts, often followed by polishing or plating to enhance its visual appeal and protective qualities in architectural, automotive trim, and consumer products.

C46400 (Naval Brass) is formulated with tin for enhanced corrosion resistance in marine and saltwater environments while maintaining good strength and machinability. It is a preferred choice for marine hardware, propeller shafts, valves, and fittings exposed to aggressive conditions. XHYE’s expertise in brass machining includes optimized strategies for C46400 to preserve its corrosion-resistant properties and deliver precision components with reliable long-term performance in marine and offshore applications.

C38500 (Architectural Brass) offers good machinability combined with excellent corrosion resistance and a warm aesthetic suitable for visible architectural and decorative applications. It is commonly used for handrails, door hardware, lighting fixtures, and ornamental components. At XHYE, we machine C38500 to high standards of surface finish and dimensional precision, supporting clients who require both functional performance and premium appearance in building and design projects.
